Chasing Fireflies

I just finished reading the Charles Martin book called Chasing Fireflies, A Novel of Discovery.

Its a truly beautiful and surprising story. It has reminded me that just because I think things look one way, I could be completely wrong and totally surprised by the truth. God has plans and purposes for us and despite the fact that life may look bleak, hopeless and doomed for nothingness, there is more than what we see. He knows the truth and just like one of the characters in this book, sometimes doesn't allow us to know the whole truth until the proper time because he is protecting us and knows the time hasn't arrived.

A few of my favorite quotes:

*"If God can make a firefly's butt light up like a star, then anything is possible. Anything."

*"Words that sink into your heart are whispered, not yelled."

*Another quote I just love is from the same character in the book, saying: "Having been born one, and now trusted with three, I know this about boys we are all born with a dad-sized hole drilled in our chest. Our dad's either fill it with themselves, or as we grow into men and start to sense the emptiness, we medicate it with stuff. Usually addictions."

This* is another scenerio, where the boy is being bullied by another boy about 40 pounds heavier and 6 inches taller. The bully chased the boy to the boys own house and was beating him up. His parents decided that it was time for the boy to learn a very hard life lesson. They locked the doors and told him he had to learn to pick his battles... Read More. " You got to learn to pick your battles. And this is one you fight. Now get up there and stand up for yourself."

He went out and beat the snot out of the other boy...sent him home crying to his mama and the bully never bothered him again.

Here is the wisdom: "I don't want you using this recipe to fight every boy in school. Best thing God gave you was two fast feet. God wasn't kidding when he said turn the other cheek, but...turning the other cheek don't mean be a doormat."
