Not good or bad...just different.

When I first began in missions years ago, I remember often hearing the phrase, "Its not good or bad, its just different." Now when I say that, I don't mean that its ok to condone abuse or meanness and call it culture. What I do mean is that if you are served chicken foot soup, or cow brains or jellied fat cubes, you eat it and don't call it wrong or bad-that is just different, very different in fact!

I have been reminding myself about this concept a lot over the last few weeks as I have been learning about the Danish school system. We have entered the world of five day school! Luca started April 1st with all the kids that will begin Kindergarten in August. I am used to things being much tighter as far as where the kids are allowed to go, field trip permission slips, school pick-up procedures, etc. On Tuesday a note was sent home from school, not to require my signature to take Luca to a class field trip on Thursday to catch tadpoles, but to request the kids to bring rubber boots! I was a bit baffled and laughed at the fact that I didn't have to send anything back. He had a great time with his classmates and told me who he held hands with all the there and all the way back, since they each had a walking partner.

Luca has made acquaintances with all the boys in his class and has made friends with 2 of them-a little boy named Bjarke and another named Toke. He says that they are not as wild as some of the other boys in his class and they have a great time playing with legos, flexi-track race cars, Star Wars, sword fighters and whatever else 5 year old boys do!

He has all of this upcoming Easter week off of school and I am thrilled to get to have him home again for the week!
