I grew up on a dead end street with just 10 houses. At the end of our road was a long metal bar to prevent anyone from accidentally going further. If they did, they would hit a fence, then a drainage ditch, and then the highway, which was the one to really avoid.
Some may think that its too bad to live so close to a major road. My little sister Katie and my cousin Monica and myself saw nothing but opportunity. Thus began the mission of "THE FRIENDLY SERVICE."
Our little crew would ride our Huffy girl bikes to the end of the street...and wave at cars going by on the busy road. We thought that it would be a nice gesture for the travelers to have some friendly kids waving their hands at them & spreading good cheer, and not just at Christmas time. Occasionally a convertible would go by and we would of course continue our ritual arm flailing and smiling, and add HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO to the sentiment.
Long gone are my days with THE FRIENDLY SERVICE. I haven't asked, but I don't think that my sister continues the service, nor my cousin Monica. My youngest son though, I believe is the new Chief in Command. Just today, I glanced in my rear view mirror to see a very scary Billy Ray Cyrus looking guy behind me in an orange truck with flames. I wanted to get away from him. He was a little close to my bumper and something about those flames just made me want to get away. I pulled into the left turn lane and he remained going straight which put him right next to Silas in his rear facing car seat. Now you have to understand that this baby of mine has the BLUEST eyes you have ever seen. I mean really, they take my breath away. He had on a blue and green striped fleece hat that will be big enough to fit year, too. So here are these huge eyes peering out at the orange truck with the flames and Billy Ray Cyrus. I hear a giggle from the babe. I see his legs kick with delight. I look back just in time to see Billy Ray thoroughly delighted in this little baby waving back at him. Peek a Boo Billy Ray, Bye Bye Billy Ray.
Some things we teach our kids, other things are just a part of them from birth. LONG LIVE THE LEGACY OF THE FRIENDLY SERVICE!
