I felt brave today and maybe a little desperate, too. The apartment we planned to rent just won't work out and coincidentally (divinely more like it) a 3 BEDROOM place in town with a tiny yard became available. Well, i was ready to go wait outside of the office at 10 pm when we found it online, but I had to go through the whole night waking up just waiting for 8 am to come so Lars could call to find out if someone has snatched it yet. At 8:09 we called, made an appointment for 11:15 for me to look. The issue was that Lars had to be at work and I have been asking for so many rides lately that I didn't want to trouble someone for this one. wayyyyyyy too far to walk as well.
What to do??? THE BUS!
Why are the timetables and charts so tricky? Really? I went to college, but can't really understand them.
I got the kids dressed and by that I of course mean pants, shirts, socks...but also snowsuit, hat, gloves and boots. It is cold and windy here....oh yeah and it was snowing!
I like to be prepared. I counted out my exact bus fare for my trip to the house and my trip home. 19 Kroner there and 19 kroner back. I figured out the timetable as best I could. We left the house with enough time and were talking about what an adventure it would be. There were 19 Kroner jingling happily in my bag. Yes, just 19, not 38. The other 19 were quietly sitting on the kitchen counter!
So there I am, out with the kids in the freezing cold waiting for the guy to show us the town house (WHICH I LOVE). I realized my money dilema would have to be solved somehow, but first I had to figure out how to get this apartment. The maintenance man showing it to me said I needed to get downtown to the office quickly, because there was another showing (and of course, I HAD to snatch the place quick) I sighed when i realized I had to still get downtown with the kids (who were now hungry) in tow.
What a sweet man, he happened to be going there and gave us a ride, even carried Silas up the stairs. I know some of you may be thinking that I am stupid for the whole thing, but I didn't feel that way. This man is a father of 6 and a good joker...but not creepy.
We got to the building. I gave the secretary my yellow card that gets me into everything here and we were on our way. Still no more kroner in my pocket, but with the promise of a rental contract being mailed to us.
So, what do foreigners do when they have no cash and are hungry? They go to Mc Donald's of course. A couple of cheeseburgers, some fries, apple juice and 20 kroner back from my debit card and we were on our way!
About 5 minutes into the bus ride home I felt a heavy head leaning over. Silas was fast asleep. So asleep that when I carried him off the bus he didn't even notice his snow boot fell off his foot...into the street.
I am glad to have a God that I can depend on, and a husband who takes care of us, and in-laws who jump in whenever we need their help. I am also really glad to have a five year old who has enough sense to pick up his brother's lost boot as he trots behind me!
